A space link starts with a balance sheet, and before building the equipment, engineers assess the transmit power, antenna gain, distance, atmospheric losses and the sensitivity of the receiver.

Ground stations plan the passages, orient the antennas and convert radio signals into packets.

Networks improve coverage and resilience.One station at a different longitude can receive a craft when it is below the horizon of another, bringing together several facilities into one operational system.
