Developing smart agriculture adapted to African realities
RECA Space Agency is developing technological solutions based on Artificial intelligence, geospatial data and the observation of the Earth to address the challenges facing local agriculture.
The aim is to design intelligent systems capable of analysing agricultural environments, identifying trends and producing actionable information for farmers, researchers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
By combining satellite imagery, environmental data, geospatial analysis and artificial intelligence models adapted to local contexts, RECA wishes to contribute to the emergence of agriculture more intelligent, predictive, sustainable and resilient in Cameroon and Africa.
Understanding agricultural ecosystems through data
Agricultural productivity depends on many factors: soil quality, rainfall, temperature, vegetation, water availability, pests and changes in land use.
RECA is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to analyze these different data sources and improve understanding of agricultural ecosystems.
The research focuses in particular on:
the identification and classification of crops;
crop health monitoring;
the detection of plant stress;
soil and agricultural land analysis;
monitoring of water availability;
the mapping of agricultural areas;
detection of changes in cultivated areas;
analysis of weather and climate data;
the early detection of agricultural risks.
Artificial intelligence adapted to local realities
Many agricultural AI solutions are developed using data from regions whose crops, climatic conditions and agricultural practices differ significantly from those in Africa.
RECA is therefore interested in the development of Artificial intelligence models adapted to Cameroonian and African agricultural environments.
These models could be trained and evaluated on the basis of data representative of local crops, climatic conditions, agricultural practices and the different ecosystems of the territory.
The ambition is not only to import existing technologies, but to contribute to the construction of African capacities in agricultural intelligence.
Satellite intelligence at the service of agriculture
Earth observation is a major source of data for monitoring agricultural territories over large areas.
The combination of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence makes it possible to consider the automation of many analytical operations: identification of crops, vegetation monitoring, detection of anomalies and observation of the evolution of plots.
RECA thus explores the development of methods capable of transforming large amounts of satellite data into directly actionable agricultural information.
Towards predictive agriculture
Beyond observation, artificial intelligence can make it possible to anticipate certain agricultural developments.
RECA studies predictive approaches combining historical data, satellite observations, weather information and environmental indicators to identify risks and trends that may affect agricultural production.
In the long term, these technologies could contribute to:
Estimating yields
the planning of crops;
irrigation optimisation;
early detection of risks;
the assessment of climate impacts;
optimisation of agricultural resources;
help with decision-making.
Contributing to food security
Agricultural intelligence is a technological, economic and strategic challenge for Africa.
By developing technologies adapted to local agricultural systems, RECA wishes to contribute to a better understanding of agricultural territories and the provision of tools for farmers, researchers, institutions and decision-makers.
This mission is part of a broader vision: to contribute to the creation of a African ecosystem of smart agricultural technologies, at the intersection of artificial intelligence, space observation, environmental science and local agricultural knowledge.
From data to agricultural intelligence
The RECA approach is based on the transformation of data into actionable information.
Satellite imagery, weather data, environmental observations and agricultural data can be combined and analysed by intelligent systems to produce a better understanding of territories and their dynamics.
Through this mission, RECA wishes to bring Space technologies, artificial intelligence and African agriculture in order to develop solutions capable not only of observing agricultural territories, but also of understand them, anticipate their evolution and help improve their productivity and resilience.
